On Pike and Pine

Rachael Andrews Taking this photo, I wanted to capture the iconic “Public Market” sign, but with a twist. I’ve seen many classic shots of just the sign against typical Seattle grey sky. As I went to take the photo, I noticed the street sign read Pike Street, and decided to include it in the shot. I also decided to remove all color except the signs neon red to bring attention to it.

I like how the letters on the Public Market sign are so bright red. This photograph uses a center item of interest and the bright letters drawer viewers in. I like the depth of field because both the market sign and street sign are clear. This photo makes me think of the rainy days in Washington because most of the photo is in black and white. This photograph gives me a dreary type of mood.

What I like about this photo is the texture that the signs have. I like that it looks like the signs are frozen some-what. I also like how the ‘Public Market’ sign is half lit up.

The element of composition that I think was used for this photo would be, center of interest because when I look at the photo my eyes first look at the “Pike”

The street sign and the ‘Public Market’ are in focus, but I really like how the street sign is in front of the Public Market, so you don’t miss out on either one.

I think the mood that is set in this is something along the lines of abandonment and sullen
